Community Support Worker (Cold Lake)

Job Title: Community Support Worker (Cold Lake)

The Community Support Worker is responsible for providing Public Awareness and Education to the community surrounding issues of Family Violence and Bullying, as well as developing and maintaining active outreach programs and case management while ensuring that follow-up services, referrals and practical supports are in place to assist clientele of the Shelter as well as to individuals who do not require residential shelter services but who may require information or may be experiencing crisis in their lives.

General

  • Identify potential outreach clientele and accept referrals through DMSCC, JPH, and/or community services. Develop an active outreach caseload by assessing clients’ needs for safety, legal support, health, education, community connections, and other supports.
  • Actively participate in case management and case conferences as required.
  • Support clients individually, in family, or in other small groups regarding plans for meeting needs, and aid client to mobilize inner capacities and resources to improve social and economic functioning.
  • Facilitate “client focused” and “trauma informed” group sessions based on a pre-determined schedule.
  • Assist DMSCC Assistant Director to develop “client focused” programming to support skills development in the areas of personal accountability, communication, stress management, self-esteem, anger management, emotional regulation, conflict resolution, healthy boundaries, and other relevant areas based on clientele need.
  • Maintain regular contact with clientele, via telephone and email, while ensuring follow-up services are provided consistently and in a timely manner.
  • Provide support and advocacy to community, JPH, and shelter clientele touched by the effects of Family Violence. Provide information, support, advocate for and refer clients to community resources, human services and other organizations as needed.
  • Increase awareness of Family Violence, Healthy Relationships, and Bullying to the community through school programs and groups, etc.
  • In collaboration with the Public Education Coordinator, increase awareness levels of Family Violence to the general public and other community agencies by offering training and facilitating workshops, community information sessions, and through visibility/attendance at public events and the use of static displays.
  • Participate in community fairs and events with multiple activities to provide project information and to raise awareness about family and domestic violence and other crisis situations.
  • Initiate, organize, and participate in local and provincial Family Violence Prevention month initiatives.
  • Maintain current knowledge of community resources and develop relationships and collaboration with other community agencies, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and mutual support.
  • Sufficient information, posters, business cards, and pamphlets must be maintained throughout the community.
  • Attend and present at inter-agency meetings in Cold Lake, Bonnyville, and Elizabeth Settlement as required
  • Perform other duties as required and as assigned by the Community Support Team Lead, DMSCC Program Coordinator, and/or designate.

Administration

  • Prepare, complete, and submit all necessary forms, support letters, documents, and information required.
  • Provide monthly reports and statistics.

Financial

  • Provide programming proposals with detailed budget outlining costs associated with various programs and/or programming ideas.

Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications:

  • Registered Social Worker (Degree) or post-secondary education in a related field.
  • 2-3 years’ experience in a similar role and/or working knowledge of the dynamics of family violence, addictions, suicide and other social issues.
  • 1-2 years of recent experience in group facilitation or public speaking.
  • Ability to relate to clients in a non-judgmental manner, and to respect client confidentiality.
  • Experience in handling emergency situations, conflict resolution, crisis intervention, and case management.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and computer skills.
  • Strong ability to work independently with minimal supervision and in a team environment.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check and Child Welfare Check.
  • Standard First Aid/CPR, ASIST Certification, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training is considered an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s license free from any restrictions.

The position is a permanent full-time (40 hours/week) job opportunity, with core hours Monday to Friday, with some evenings, and weekends on an ad hoc basis. This could include facilitation of program and groups in the evenings. The successful candidate must be flexible in working hours to provide coverage as needed.
